Climate change, scarcity of resources, loss of biodiversity – these are just some of the challenges we face as a society. In all business transactions, we pay attention not only to the economic but also to the ecological and social effects. We implement this in the context of environmental and social assessments and by focusing on resource efficiency and renewable energy, two key aspects of the Development Bank of Austria, among other things.

Energy and Resource Management

In addition to this evaluation of our impact on the environment in our core area of business, we have also been long committed to using resources wisely and protecting the environment in the day-to-day operations at all of our sites. Since 2001, we have been striving to continuously improve our environmental performance through a certified environmental management system in accordance with the EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) Regulation. We collect and report our environmental performance indicators annually in the Sustainability Report.

365 days a year, 24 hours a day, we strive to keep our energy and resource consumption as low as possible. We continuously monitor and optimize energy consumption at all our locations. Among other things, we have already implemented the following measures:

  • Energy from 100% hydropower
  • Photovoltaic system on the roof   
  • LED conversion of lighting
  • Conversion to floor lamps with movement detectors and daylight sensors
  • Heat recovery from refrigeration for the data centre to heat the rooms at the Strauchgasse location and for hot-water treatment
  • Motion detectors in the side rooms
  • Non-contact fittings in the toilets
  • Tenders for renovations follow the ÖkoKauf Wien criteria
  • No facade lighting
  • Main switch concept to prevent standby mode
  • Floor printers
  • Building control system for continuous monitoring of energy consumption
  • Daily reading of water consumption to detect problems early
  • Monthly reading of the energy meter readings
  • Option to use a company e-bike
  • An electric car and pool car for unavoidable rides
  • Consideration of energy efficiency criteria in the procurement of IT hardware
  • Option to use resource-saving and recyclable office supplies
  • Canteen with vegetarian and seasonal food
  • Compensation of CO2 emissions caused by OeEB air travel through a reforestation project in Ethiopia by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) Vienna
  • Climate neutral rental and use of the Reitersaal hall
  • Certified environmental management system according to EMAS (Eco Management and Audit Scheme) and ISO 14001: 2015

For the completion of the renovation work and the loft conversion in the OeKB building on Strauchgasse, OeKB received a GreenBuilding Partner certificate in 2012. By joining this program, OeKB has undertaken to disclose the energy certificate, energy savings and current status compared to the state before the refurbishment.
