EU Commissioner Jozef Síkela's visit to Vienna sends a strong signal of support for greater Austrian business participation in the European Union's Global Gateway initiative.

Global Gateway Investment Hub - New Point of Contact for Austrian Businesses

EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela visited Vienna in mid-July. During his visit, he met with the Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, and attended a working meeting at OeKB. The focus of these meetings was the European Commission's Global Gateway Investment Hub, which is a new point of contact for Austrian businesses seeking to engage in the implementation of the EU Global Gateway Strategy.

At the same time, Team Austria was officially launched. This initiative, which operates upstream of the Investment Hub, is designed to provide even more targeted support to Austrian companies on suitable projects in the future.

I’m very happy about the official launch of Team Austria, the national front door into Global Gateway. It lets Austrian firms bring their project to the Global Gateway Investment Hub and seek European support, both technical and diplomatic. This is how we turn Austrian expertise into European projects abroad, because Austria has the industry to compete globally and strengthen the European offer. From hydropower to railways to renewable hydrogen, Austrian companies already deliver in the markets where Europe invests. With Team Austria they can achieve even more.

Global Gateway opens up new perspectives

There is a growing worldwide demand for sustainable infrastructure. Through the Global Gateway initiative, the European Union is promoting investments in forward-looking sectors such as green energy, sustainable transport, digitalisation, education, and healthcare. This creates additional opportunities for Austrian companies and investors to pursue business projects in developing and emerging markets.

Global Gateway is not a funding programme as such. Instead, it is a coordination framework designed to better align existing European and national financing and support instruments more effectively, thereby leveraging private-sector investment. To be eligible for Global Gateway, business projects must generate a clear strategic benefit for Europe while also demonstrating how they create additional development impact, for example through targeted measures to strengthen local capacities, skills development, or institutional support in partner countries.

Opportunities for Austrian exporters

Global Gateway is often associated with large-scale infrastructure projects. However projects with a strong export, supply, or business focus can also be considered within the Global Gateway framework under certain conditions. During the Austrian pilot phase, the main focus will be on green energy and sustainable transport projects.

Austria is home to internationally leading companies in infrastructure, mobility, energy, water and technology, with strong opportunities in emerging markets. However, many of these markets also come with heightened political, economic, regulatory and financial risks.

This is where OeKB can add value: with export credit guarantees, we enable business ventures in challenging markets and help manage risks responsibly. Through OeEB, we also provide development finance and bring a long-term, sustainable perspective to private investments. Backed by EU instruments, we can leverage our existing strengths even more effectively. This is the logic of Global Gateway.

Why Global Gateway is worth exploring

There are increasingly attractive participation opportunities for Austrian companies:

  • The added value of the European offering is becoming clearer: Sustainable development and European competitiveness are being linked more closely, at both the national and European levels. In addition to supporting infrastructure projects, Global Gateway specifically promotes sustainable development in partner countries, thereby strengthening Europe’s economic resilience.
  • Improved financing opportunities: By combining European and national instruments - such as guarantees, development finance, and export finance - risks can be reduced more effectively and private-sector investment can be facilitated.
  • More targeted support: In addition to new EU-level structures, the national Team Austria framework supports companies throughout the entire process, from project identification and development to submission.

Team Austria supports Austrian companies

During his working visit to Vienna in mid-July, EU Commissioner Jozef Síkela highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in an increasingly challenging global environment. He also emphasised the international strengths of Austrian industry, which has expertise in areas such as rail infrastructure, hydropower, and green hydrogen, and makes an important contribution to Europe’s overall value proposition.

With the official launch of the newly established Team Austria, several Austrian institutions are pooling their expertise to support companies in developing and implementing suitable Global Gateway projects. Alongside OeKB and OeEB, Team Austria brings together the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs (BMeiA), the Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, Energy and Tourism (BMWET), the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKÖ).
