Austria provides soft loans to support projects in countries with high investment needs and limited economic capacity. Namibia was recently added to the list of eligible recipient countries.

Namibia: Growth opportunities despite structural challenges

Namibia faces significant structural challenges, including high unemployment, considerable income inequality and shortcomings in the education system. At the same time, the country offers attractive long-term growth prospects, driven, for example, by its natural resources and numerous energy projects.

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance recently added Namibia to the list of countries eligible for soft loans. In Austria, eligibility for soft loans is determined not only by the provisions of the OECD Arrangement, but also by the priorities of Austria’s soft loan policy.

New and less developed markets offer attractive business opportunities for Austrian companies. To facilitate market entry, OeKB, together with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Finance, provides soft loans as part of the export financing scheme.

These development aid loans offer particularly favourable financing terms and combine two objectives: supporting Austrian exports while promoting sustainable development in the target countries.

Soft loans are available for projects with a strong development impact, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, healthcare, education and the environment.
